Default More foes after complete vanquish?

I vanquished Gyala Hatchery last night, and after defeating SoulWhisper, the rit boss and his surrounding Rot Wallows on the small Island on the south end of the area (not far from the entrance to Leviathan Pits) I got the Gold helmet signal that I'd vanquished the area. I wanted to finish mapping, so I ran up on the island where Soulwhisper was and down a dead end trail to map that last area and three Oni popped up. It wasn't a problem since I had spirit summon, but I was just surprised.

So obviously the area hadn't been vanquished even through I got the reward. This has never happened. Anyone know what's going on?

It happens quite a lot across the whole game. Could be enemies that hadn't spawned or somehow weren't taken into account for the total VQ count, until you got close enough.

Whatever it is, is's quite frequent. I finished a few VQs with some enemies on my map that were on a place I'd already went through, at least there wasn't anything there the 1st time.

Pop ups only count towards the VQ-kill count after they have popped. So if you go through an area without triggering pop-ups, you are not required to kill them to complete the VQ.

Pop up mobs and mobs that spawn when you take a quest AFTER you finish your vanquish do not count for the vanquish.

Hey, thanks for the explanation. I just throught it was a bit odd, I thought before an area was considered vanquished you had to get all the popups. I will also need to keep this in mind when I map. I'm in the middle of vanquishing Cantha and mapping as I go and I usually flag my henchmen after I vanquish so I can map without them getting in my way. I'll just have to be aware this can happen.

One of nastier places for this to happen is in Mehtani Keys. If you go north to the rocky area just outside the portal, there's a bunch of Mandragors that pop up. What makes it bad is that it's not hard to trigger 2-3 groups at one time. I skipped that spot while vanquishing and came back and mapped it in NM.

As has been said, pop-ups only need to be killed if they pop-up during a vanq. There are also some rare-ish occasions where mobs will run in or out of a portal, which can affect a vanquish.
And, of course, sometimes the quests you have active can affect the number of creatures to kill.

Just 2 more tips:

*Things that appear and disappear (Wurms are an example, don't know if there are others) MUST be killed once they appear, even if you run away from them and they stay underground.
*Check Wiki before vanquishing, for certain areas it'll tell you to stay away from certain corners of the map since they consist only of popups, and as such you're only slowing yourself down by going there.

Some areas have monsters that do not need to be killed for a Vanquish. Tahnnakai Temple is a great example of this. You can complete the vanquish by killing 2 Temple Guardians, but there are a ton of Jade Brotherhood groups on the map. Waijjun Bazaar is another area with mobs that do not need to be killed. Until you enter their 'range', they don't count towards the vanquish. But in your case, it was a simple pop-up. Pop up groups only count once they have been popped.
